“Big Ugly” Goes Under

On the 29th of January, 6-14 students got together and buried the “Big Ugly” – aka the statue in front of the library. Here are some photos that show the event:

I lost a key in that pile and almost lost a phone. It’s wierd to know that something of yours is sitting in an area only 10′ x 10′ and still not be able to find it.
The artistic focus here, of course, is how Minimalism is overtaking Abstractism.
Or, alternatively, the Big Ugly represents those things — or people — that Whitworth doesn’t quite understand.
The snow represents how we try to cover those confusing things up.
Perhaps while the pile of snow covered this work of art, some students realized how “Not Ugly” the so-called “Big Ugly” is… an artist can only hope anyway.
Actually, while walking to the library for class today, I was thinking how sad it was that the snow had melted enough that we could actually see the thing again…but it’s a nice thought, Megan [Smiley face]
